Greetings to the Great White North from the Dirty South

Earlier this month, AbundaTrade.com began accepting trades from the fine citizens of Canada. We have long had many wonderful Canadian customers purchase from us, and we are excited at the opportunity to send some love back their way by offering the most for their used CDs, DVDs, and video games. And we’re not stopping there, oh heavens no! Trades with a minimum list value of $75 are eligible for free pickup and shipping by UPS. That’s right – we are willing to come all the way to the door of our Canadian brethren to help them get the most cash for their used CDs, DVDs, and video games. If you are a Canadian interested in trading with us, you can view the full ins and outs on our Canada page.

We are truly excited to step forward with our business and engage in a mutually beneficial relationship with the fine citizens of Canada. However, we must openly admit that we are shamefully unknowledgeable on Canadian culture and history (I personally only have knowledge relating to Canadian celebrities and Kids in the Hall comedy troupe), but we are energized to become educated on all things Canuck – and invite our Canadian traders and customers to share with us any information they would like to share about their wonderful country. It doesn’t even have to be historical or statistical fact; we’d love to hear about what you as Canadians love doing and what Canada means to you.

I’ll even share with you about the southern United States to get the ball rolling. When we have friends and family over to grill out in the backyard, it is not a “barbecue” – it is a “cookout”. We save the term “barbecue” for when we are making pulled pork, ribs, or some variation of slow-cooking part or all of a pig. It gets way, way more complex (and a little heated) if you talk to barbecue enthusiasts about it, but that’s for another blog altogether. Your turn, Canadians!

As we await nuggets of Canadian knowledge, we invite you to contact our Trade department if you have any questions about our free pickup and shipping of Canadian trades – or any question you may have about AbundaTrade.com at all. We also invite you to peruse our online store to celebrate Canadian heritage by jamming out some Celine Dion or Bryan Adams. Or you can watch the United States and Canada go to war in South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. Until then, we shall say farewell as the Canadians do: goodbye!

Need a little caffeine for those upcoming all-night cram sessions?

It’s back to school for many this week.  AbundaTrade may be able to help students and parents alike.  Students, maybe you want to meet your friends at Starbucks for your study group (and a little gossip) before that big test.  Parents, you may want to take advantage of some free time and relax with a “cup of joe” while your kids are at school.  Whatever the reason, just refer a friend to AbundaTrade and you may qualify for a free $5 Starbuck’s gift card on us, plus your friend will get a $5 gift card, too!

Refer a Friend!

Here’s the details.  Nearly half of our customers do multiple trades. We are thrilled that you keep coming back to us!  If you like our trade program, you’re going to love our new Refer A Friend program!

Every time you refer a friend to us and they submit a trade of $50 or more, you AND your friend will each be given a free $5 Starbucks Gift Card.  You (the referer) can refer as many friends as you want. Your friends (the referee) can only get one card per household. (The referee must complete the trade within 6 months of the referer’s trade to qualify.) Contact our Trade Department if you have any other questions.

We make it easy for you to share this program with your friends on Facebook. Once you’ve spread the word, sit back and wait for those gift cards to start rolling in. Give in to temptation and maybe try one of those krispy rice treats that’s the size of a small puppy. Hey, it’s your free gift card so go crazy!  Some rules do apply.

Take a minute and refer a friend right now.  There are two easy ways to qualify for the referral program:

1. Every time someone submits a list, we ask how they heard about us. Tell your friends to
select, “referred by a friend” and then enter your name.

2. You can tell us your friends names and we will verify them with our records.

email a friend

And when you are done with your textbooks, do not forget to check our Trade Calculator to see how much we will pay you for your used textbooks.  Happy studying!

The Abunda Numba Cruncha

We’ve been crunching some numbers, here at AbundaTrade, and we recently discovered something that we think is pretty darn cool. Not only are we good at math…but on average we accept 25% more items than our online competitors, and we pay an average of 50% more per item!

Yes, we know that sounds impressive and you’re probably wondering how we came up with such numbers. It was easy. We took actual lists of items submitted to us from our customers, and ran them through the competition’s website. Low and behold, our offers were better than anything our competition offered. We’re talking waaaaaayyy better.

At AbundaTrade.com we pride ourselves in knowing we have the best customer service, offer the most value for your collection, and accept the most items. We always knew we were the best at what we do, but validation is always good.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows–Part 2…the end or is there more?

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" from Warner Bros.

In case you have not heard, July 15th marks the release of “Harry Potter the Deathly Hallows-Part 2,” the finale to the Harry Potter film series.  If you are a loyal Harry Potter fan, chances are you have already purchased your movie tickets.  With school out of session for the summer, it will be hard to find last minute tickets for the midnight showings offered this Wednesday night.  The film will be offered in both 2-D and 3-D formats. The 3-D glasses many theatres will offer for this installment will have round lenses like Harry’s rather than the rectangular lenses on traditional 3-D glasses.  Whether you prefer 2-D or 3-D, from the looks of the trailers, the movie will have plenty of action, special effects and our favorite Harry Potter characters to make the trip to the theatre well worth it.  Break out your wands, capes, broomsticks and magic spells and get ready for a wild ride!

Even after the final film, the Harry Potter era will not be over.  Thanks to Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling who has just announced a free website she is launching called Pottermore.  Rowling has announced it will be available to all beginning in October 2011 and if you visit the Pottermore website on July 31st, 2011, Rowling will announce how some may be able to visit the site sooner.  Click on the arrow below to view her announcement describing the new site on .

Of course, if you need to brush up on any of your Harry Potter, remember we have a wide array of Harry Potter books, DVDs, interactive DVD and video games available here at our AbundaTrade shop.  Just type Harry Potter into the title search bar and all of our Harry Potter offerings will appear.  No magic wand necessary!  Check back often if you do not find the Harry Potter you are looking for as we add new items to our inventory daily.

Bolster Your Gas & Grocery Budgets–Trade Used Media for Cash

Gas prices, food prices, inflation “Oh, my!”  As if you have not yet noticed at your local gas pump or grocery, the prices seem to be creeping up a bit more each time you go to the grocery store or gas pump.  While high gas prices have dipped ever so slightly in the past week or so in some areas, according to the Energy Information Administration, they remain very high and food prices keep on rising.  Just look at this chart from CNN.com comparing food price increases from January 2010 to January 2011.

Chart from CNN.com, click image to see full CNN.com article

According to the Washington Post, “Consumer spending rose 0.4 percent in April but much of the gain reflected higher prices for food and gasoline. With inflation removed, the spending increase was a much weaker 0.1 percent.”   It is no wonder many of us have resorted to eating out less, using coupons more and putting summer vacations on the back burner so to speak.  AbundaTrade.com would like to make your summer a little easier by putting more cash in your wallet.

Why not supplement your gas and grocery budgets by cleaning out your closets and media centers?  You know those books you have not read in years, the video games you have already beaten a dozen times, the CD you used to listen to every day but now can’t stand, or the movie you loved and memorized every line of ten years ago.  Get them out, dust them off, and enter them into our online trade calculator to see their estimated value.  Then just box them up and ship them to us.  You may even be eligible for free shipping.  Once we receive and evaluate your stuff, you tell us if you prefer us to deposit your cash directly into your PayPal account or mail you a check.  Can you say “Ka-ching?!”

All of us on Team AbundaTrade, including Bootsie, A.K.A. Bootleg D. Cat,  would like to take a moment to say, “We hope you all have a fabulous, fun and safe Summer 2011!  Thank you AbundaTrade customers!”

Charleston and the Origin of Memorial Day

On Monday, we as a nation took the time to remember those who have served, who are currently serving, and who have given their lives in the defense of the United States of America and the values she stands for. We always appreciate what our men and women in uniform do and have done, but on Memorial Day, we take an extra step back to look at just how much our armed services have done to protect us and our way of life – and just how much it has cost them too. However, not many people think about how Memorial Day began, which is quite an amazing tale in itself.

On Memorial Day, the New York Post ran an in-depth article detailing the origins of Memorial Day. In this fascinating read, we learn that the first Memorial Day occurred right here in Charleston in 1865 during the Civil War. Freed slaves and abolitionists gathered in Charleston, now largely deserted by most whites after Union bombardment, to pay respect to the Union soldiers that had given their lives so that slaves may be free.

Charleston Memorial DayThe first Memorial Day ceremonies took place at the city’s Washington Race Course and Jockey Club, which had been converted into a Confederate prison of harsh conditions, until it was abandoned as the Union army approached the city. A large group of black women descended upon this once cruel location, and proceeded to give proper reburial to the Union soldiers who had perished there. Once the site was prepared, a parade of 10,000 black schoolchildren, freed slaves, and white missionaries and teachers was held on the grounds. Once the parade was over, people “enjoyed picnics, listened to speeches and watched soldiers drill” – much like how many of us celebrate Memorial Day today.

In only a few short years from this event, the concept of Memorial Day had spread throughout the nation, becoming an event to pay respect to all who had fallen in the Civil War. Eventually, Memorial Day grew to encompass a day to reflect and appreciate all armed service men and women across our history, and to pay them the respect they so richly deserve.

The New York Times has another fabulous article regarding the origins of Memorial Day in Charleston. We invite you to shop the AbundaTrade.com online store for movies and books about our great military patriots, and hopefully gain some more insight into just how much our nation’s bravest have done to make our country safe and free.

SC Senate Reaches Deal with Amazon Bringing More Jobs to the State

In a time when AbundaTrade’s home state of South Carolina is suffering unemployment rates of 9.6% in April, higher than the national average of 8.7%, (according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics,) the South Carolina Senate stayed in session until after 12:00 a.m. this morning to reach a compromise with Amazon, the online retailer.   According to Robert Kittle, reporter and photographer for News Channel 7‘s Columbia Bureau,  “The deal would exempt Amazon.com from collecting the state sales tax for five years in exchange for the company’s opening a large distribution facility in Lexington County that creates at least 2,000 new jobs with health benefits. The deal also requires Amazon to invest at least $125 million in the state.”  For more details read Kittle’s full article here.

While we may not be adding 2,000 jobs to South Carolina just yet, the small but mighty AbundaTrade.com is proud to employ 22 South Carolinians. Meet our team here. Okay, so it’s actually 24 employees when you include our “Security Team” of Bootsie, A.K.A. Bootleg D. Cat and Brinkley who are paid in love, attention and, of course, food, water, toys and other goodies.  AbundaTrade.com uses Amazon as well as our own online shop and other online marketplaces to list and sell our products.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with us, AbundaTrade.com promotes reCommerce.  What is reCommerce?  We define reCommerce as the buying of previously purchased merchandise directly from consumers and selling previously purchased merchandise directly to consumers. The value that AbundaTrade offers through its services and products will encourage customers to choose trading in over throwing out, and to support reCommerce over wasteful manufacturing.

AbundaTrade.com believes in smart consumerism.  At AbundaTrade, smart consumerism means putting your unwanted stuff back into the system rather than into a landfill, and getting the stuff that you do want from a socially conscious company that saves you money. When you are a smart consumer, you create a win-win scenario for your wallet and for our environment.  So gather up your unwanted books, CDs, DVDs and video games and visit AbundaTrade.com.  You can trade your unwanted items for the items you now want or simply trade for cash.
